I provide a range of professional, high-quality editorial and proofreading services. In particular, I specialize in working with independent authors (see Crayon Rouge) and academic writers, including both students and established scholars (see Academic Outcomes).
Whether you are looking for thorough copy-editing of your manuscript, help with final formatting for publication, or an entire suite of editorial help from first drafting to published book, I can tailor my services to meet your needs and requirements. My editorial principle is to improve a piece of writing while always respecting and honouring the author’s voice.
As standard I will check and correct the following:
- Grammatical sense
- Syntax and phrasing
- Spelling (conforming with either British or American spelling, and with any other client preferences, such as ‘-ise’ endings)
- Consistency (e.g. of hyphenation, capitalization, number treatment)
- Layout and formatting
- Correlation of parts (e.g. correct ordering of chapters)
- Presentation of references and bibliography
I can also provide more thorough copy-editing to:
- Improve style, phrasing, diction and fluency
- Remove repetition and wordiness
- Fix irregular or awkward sentences
- Repair or rewrite problematic passages
- Enhance flow between paragraphs and chapters
- Check for consistency of content and narrative
- Ensure basic factual accuracy
Depending on the project, I can offer developmental and content editing (advising on and assisting with the structure, organization and content of your manuscript) at any stage of the writing process.
In addition, I can professionally format a manuscript to be sent to a literary agent or publisher, to be published as an ebook (on Amazon Kindle or Smashwords, for example) or to be published as a print-on-demand book (via CreateSpace or IngramSpark, for example).
I can work with Word and PDF as well as hard copy, and if requested by a client I will use BSI proof marks.
I will edit and proofread according to the requirements and preferences of a client (e.g. British or American spelling, ‘-ise’ rather than ‘-ize’ endings), conforming to any chosen style guide. Where there is no style guide, I can supply one of my own (usually based on either the Chicago Manual of Style or New Hart’s Rules) adapting it as necessary to suit the client.
For large projects, I provide the client with a style sheet, a tracked-changes Word file, a comments-only Word file, and a PDF of the edited file.
I always offer a free initial consultation in order to discuss and assess a project with a potential client. The consultation entails no commitment on the client’s part, and includes the preparation of a quote with full details of any proposed work and my fee for doing it.
I do not publish my rates here, since it is impossible to price a project without first assessing a client’s requirements and, if possible, a manuscript. As a rough guide, however, a client can expect to pay in the region of £15-£25 per hour, depending on the nature of the work, which represents excellent value for the editorial help a client receives.
